Health, Education, Peace-Building and Security
Barkada Kontra Bisyo is a youth-centered initiative that promotes healthy lifestyles and discourages harmful habits such as smoking, alcohol abuse, and illegal drug use. The program recognizes the strong influence of peer groups (“barkada") in shaping behavior, and it leverages this influence to encourage positive decision-making among young people. Instead of engaging in risky activities, members are guided toward productive, meaningful, and community-oriented pursuits. The program typically involves awareness campaigns, peer mentoring, leadership training, and recreational activities that strengthen camaraderie while reinforcing positive values. By creating a supportive environment, Barkada Kontra Bisyo empowers youth to resist peer pressure and become role models within their communities. Objectives: 1. To educate young people about the risks and consequences of engaging in vices. 2. To promote healthy, active, and value-driven lifestyles among the youth. 3. To strengthen peer support systems that encourage positive behavior. 4. To develop leadership, self-discipline, and decision-making skills. 5. To involve the community in preventing substance abuse and other harmful habits. Barkada Kontra Bisyo aims to build a generation of responsible, empowered, and socially aware individuals who choose growth and well-being over harmful vices. Beyond simply discouraging negative habits, the program focuses on transforming the mindset of the youth by helping them realize their potential and value in society. It encourages them to take ownership of their actions and understand the long-term impact of their choices on their health, relationships, education, and future opportunities. The initiative also highlights the importance of positive peer influence, turning friendships into a source of motivation rather than pressure. By strengthening bonds among members, the program creates a safe space where young people feel accepted, heard, and supported. This sense of belonging reduces thelikelihood of turning to harmful behaviors as a coping mechanism for stress, curiosity, or social acceptance. Moreover, Barkada Kontra Bisyo promotes active participation in community development. Youth are encouraged to engage in volunteer work, outreach programs, and leadership activities that not only keep them away from vices but also allow them to contribute meaningfully to society. Through these experiences, they develop confidence, responsibility, and a sense of purpose. In the long run, the program envisions communities where young individuals act as advocates of healthy living, inspiring others to follow the same path. By fostering discipline, resilience, and strong moral values, Barkada Kontra Bisyo serves as a foundation for building safer communities and a more productive nation.
