Historical Background of the 4-H Club of the Philippines 1900 – 4-H Club work started in the US with boys and girls interested in agriculture. 1934 – Maria Y. Orosa, founder of the Home Extension in the Philippines, started to work with boys and girls interested in gardening and food preservation. 1946 – The Agricultural Extension Division (AED) of the bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) organized the 4W Program/Club. The 4Ws stood for: WILL, WELL-BEING, WORK, WISDOM 1952 – RA No. 680 created the Bureau of Agricultural Extension (BAEx). - AED of BPI was transferred to BAEx. - The US granted the use of the name 4-H Club in the Philippines. - 4W Club assumed the name of 4-H Club which marked the start of 4-H Club in the - Philippines under the stewardship of BAEx. The meaning of the 4 letter H 4 letter H means developing: • HEAD - To think, plan and reason; to be innovative and creative. • HANDS - To be caring, sharing, committed and civic-conscious. • HEART - To be useful, skillful and serviceable. • HEALTH -To enjoy life and participate actively in nation-building. What is 4-H Club? ? Is an organization of Out-of-School youth (OSY) & In-school youth (ISY) involved in agriculture programs and livelihood projects for the four-fold development of the HEAD, HEART, HANDS, and HEALTH. ? Boys and girls from 10-30 years old, single ? Engaged in farming and Agri-based income generating projects (IGPs). ? Membership is open and voluntarily. ? Emphasizes community-based projects in agriculture and homemaking. ? Is an avenue for farm family development. Aims of 4-H Club ? Provides opportunities to “LEARN BY DOING” ? Enhances productivity and self-reliance. ? Instills spirit of volunteerism, cooperation, and dignity of labor ? Enables the youth to use their time, talents, and energies wisely. ? Promotes fellowship, understanding and goodwill. 4-H Motto: “To make the best better.” 4-H Slogan “Learn by doing”
