Taekwondo is the art of self-defense that originated in Korea. It is recognized as one of the oldest forms of martial arts in the world, reaching back over 2,000 years. The name was selected for its appropriate description of the art: Tae (foot), Kwon (hand), Do (art). Taekwondo is primarily a kicking art, often with greater emphasis on the sport aspect of the art. Taekwondo stylist tend to fight at an extended range, and keep opponents away with their feet. The training tends to emphasize sparring, but has forms and the basic are important as well. Objectives of Taekwondo 1. To develop an appreciation for taekwondo as a sport and an art 2. To achieve physical fitness through positive participation 3. To improve mental discipline and emotional equanimity 4. To learn self-defense 5. To develop a sense of responsibility for one self and others
